WIRELESS DATA BellSouth Cellular buys U.S. Robotics gear.

U.S. Robotics announced last week that BellSouth Cellular has selected the company's new Wireless Access System for its PowerData Gateway service.

The implementation will be the first for the U.S. Robotics platform, which is a component of the vendor's Total Control Enterprise Network Hub for integrating local and wide area networks. The wireless piece was introduced earlier this year (Telephony, May 27, page 22).

The U.S. Robotics hub sits at the cellular switching center and routes data onto the wireless network. The component will function as a modem pool and allow BellSouth Cellular customers to access the Internet, private corporate network information and e-mail using their cellular phones and laptop computers, said a BellSouth Cellular spokeswoman.
