Released this week at DEMOmobile, the software became available after only four months of beta testing. Like Skype’s Windows, Linux and Mac PC software, the application is free and all calls made to other Skype users are not charged. Also like its PC software, Skype users can dial out of the Skype network calling any phone number in the world for set rates approximating 2 cents per minute.

Founded by the developers of peer-to-peer music and media download service KaZaA, Skype has already made a significant splash in the VoIP community. Its free software has been downloaded 21 million times, and the network has millions of active users, though the company has not revealed how many customers use the paid SkypeOut service. – Kevin Fitchard
