The VLX2006 is a two-rack-unit OC-48 Sonet access device that can be deployed either at customer premises such as office buildings or in an outdoor cabinet. It allows for the delivery of 14 protected DS-1s, 3 protected DS-3s or eight Fast Ethernet or Gigabit Ethernet links, allowing carriers to offer a mix of legacy services and Ethernet over Sonet. Carriers can offer protected Ethernet links using the VLX2006, and they can shape the bandwidth of their service offerings in 500 kb/s increments.

Using its own internally developed ASICs to keep its costs down, White Rock is touting the new product as "the first OC-48 ADM under $10,000." The gear is ideally suited for small independent telcos, the company said.

The VLX2006 begins trials next week and will be generally available in mid-August.
