Today, the company introduced what it’s calling its iAN-8000 Multi-Service Access Node, which combines the functions of UTStarcom’s AN-2000 IP DSLAM and the iAN-2000 VoIP Media Gateway platform, as well as the functionality of a traditional digital loop carrier. By combining all three functions, UTStarcom believes it has a flexible box that can support IP-based DSL services as well as newer Ethernet from competitive carriers.

Operators can configure the iAN-8000 to support both narrowband and broadband voice and data applications. However, the company also is putting a heavy emphasis on marketing toward media/entertainment applications, recognizing that that will drive some carriers to make the move to an all IP-based environment.

“Cisco annoyed the hell out of people when they said voice was going to be free, but you have the same issue when the broadcast content starts getting pushed over the IP network,” said Jeffrey Paine, vice president of strategic marketing for UTStarcom. “We need to provide a whole range of transitional strategies.”

In a multi-tenant environment where businesses also are service, the iAN-8000 can act as a PBX or as a PBX extension for remote workers. Additionally, it can be used as a traditional DSLAM for remote high-speed access.

“You can deploy an combination of IPDSLSM port, NGDLC ports and VoIP ports,” said Daniel Marcus, product marketing manager for UTStarcom. “It’s a box that allows you to move in very slowly and make a transition from ATM to IP.”
