GAP, which will add about $8.4 million in annual revenue and 16,300 subscribers to Usurf’s balance sheet, also give the access provider a running start in Texas, a state where it has not previously provided service.

“What it gives us is CLEC certification in the state of Texas,” said Doug McKinnon, CEO of Usurf. “Now we’ve got a base from which to operate.”

The Texas PUC also has approved transferring the operating certificate and has expanded the geographic area to include the entire state.

GAP currently serves mostly residential and small businesses in the Dallas/Fort Worth area with a pure local and long-distance voice service. Usurf, which acquired Colorado CLEC SunWest earlier this year, likely will expand that service portfolio to include data services soon but will keep the same market focus.

“It’s kind of a niche market, and everybody has ignored that niche,” McKinnon said.
