The contract includes 20-year leases for six OC-192s. Hickam AFB, Fort Shafter and Camp Smith, on the island of Oahu, will use the service for voice and high-speed data services, according to Time Warner Telecom.

The competitively bid contract was awarded by the Defense Information Technology Contracting Organization-Pacific in Pearl Harbor.

Hawaii was also one of the first markets in which Time Warner Telecom began providing cross-country Ethernet service a year ago. Mortgage banking firm Magnus Financial used Time Warner Telecom to connect its Tucson, Ariz., headquarters to data centers in Honolulu, Hawaii and Ontario, Calif.

Verizon Communications recently sold some of its Hawaiian access lines to the Carlyle Group, which invests in military and defense markets.
