SureWest, which last year bought WinFirst’s fiber network, is deploying a fiber-to-the-home network to about 7000 customers and is looking to provide voice-over-IP services to residential and business users in the Sacramento/Roseville corridor.
The announcement comes just a week after General Bandwidth announced an OEM agreement with Alcatel to provide the G6 as part of Alcatel’s fiber-to-the-user platform. The Austin, Texas-based company said it has seen a renewed interest in extending fiber deep into the access network for voice, data and video service as rural carriers increasingly are facing competition
“Additional voice revenue is nice, but the triple play is something everyone wants,” said Ken Cavanaugh, director of business development and corporate communications for General Bandwidth.
As part of the OEM agreement, Alcatel also will provide marketing and sales support for the combined platform.
