The NetHome System allows carriers to use existing copper as a backbone within the home while also providing a wireless link to end devices. At the heart of the system is a new wall plate—dubbed Smart Outlet--that includes two RJ-11 jacks for voice and one RJ-45 for either voice or data service. A second wall plate adds a flat antenna for 802.11b connections.

Controlling the wall plates and managing the internal network is a power unit that sits between a DSL or cable modem and the outside connection. The unit delivers the DC power needed to support up to 10 Smart Outlets and provides for the isolation of data transmission between the internal home network and the external public telephone network.

Unlike many others in the home networking market, SercoNet is convinced that the only way to reach beyond the early adopters that already have home networks is through service providers.

“We think home networking is at an inflection point,” said Jim Gayton, director of marketing for SercoNet. “If you look at the service providers’ perspective, there’s a party going on and they’re not invited. Most of the products going out now are going to self-installers.”

Consequently, the company believes a business case argument exists to justify an initial truck roll for installation. (The economic case for DSL wasn’t made until carriers could get more than 90% of their customers to self-install the service.)

“There is some inherent value in having an install done,” Gayton said. “What we’re really talking about is taking the home network from a hobbyist to a real professional service.”
