The newest Tenors, available in versions that support 2, 4, 6 or 8 T1/E1/PRI spans, can scale from eight to 120 simultaneous VoIP calls. As in previous versions, the new switches support both H.323 and SIP protocols. Additionally, the MultiPath architecture allows users to use the public network as a back-up option in cases where quality of service falls below set thresholds on an IP network.
"It really allows you to not be forced into setting up a tie trunk," said Charles Rutledge, vice president of marketing for Quintum.
This new product, dubbed the DX Series, gives carriers the option of implementing IP local loop or calling card applications in their smaller points of presence.
With the switch, Quintum is also launching a new management platform that lets network managers remotely configure a Tenor anywhere IP access is available.
Quintum, which has about half of its sales in the U.S. and Canada, is anticipating that North American carriers will be the first customers of the new switch with some interest coming from Asia and Europe.
"The trend here is the local access model," Rutledge said. "That is a trend that has been in Asia for a while."
