ShadeTree 3.0 adds a L2TP network server aimed at carriers offering broadband services. Additionally, the newest version of ShadeTree includes the ability to upgrade software without taking down services. That feature, dubbed LIVE (Laurel Instant VErsioning) lets carriers use real-time patches of portions of live running code, without impacting system operation.

Also, the newest version of the software includes VPLS (Virtual Private LAN Service) support, which gives carriers a method for extending transparent LAN services across an MPLS backbone.

"Traditionally, the RBOCs have used ATM for VLAN service," said Steve Vogelsang, vice president of marketing for Laurel Networks. "In this case, we’re allowing them to implement it over MPLS instead of ATM."
