The demonstration, which will be done at the FS-VDSL meeting place this week in Toronto, will use video over VDSL and include chipsets from both Ikanos and ST Microelectronics.

“That’s a major milestone that is going to help trigger the mass deployment,” said Richard Sekar, vice president of marketing at Ikanos.

The single chip gives equipment vendors the ability to put both ADSL and VDSL-DMT onto a single line card. For carriers, a single line card will allow them to reduce the total cost of ownership by eliminating their need to purchase multiple line cards for multiple services.

“From a management point of view, your total cost of ownership is very low,” said Sekar. “You can switch from ADSL to VDSL without sending out some on to change the line card out. It all comes down to price price price.”

Ikanos, which has shipped more than 200,000 VDSL-DMT ports worldwide, anticipates hitting the 1-million-port milestone at some point this year in part because of the falling equipment prices.
