The deal is the first for General Bandwidth with a U.S. cable operator, and the first significant contract after it announced in July that the G6R has been certified by CableLabs as meeting the PacketCable specifications.
"We’ve had deployments in cable similar to this architecture outside the U.S. but this is the first inside the U.S.," said Ken Cavanaugh, director of corporate communications for General Bandwidth.
RCN declared bankruptcy in May but is expecting to emerge by the end of the year. Despite the financial issues, RCN has not held back on the rollout of its voice strategy. Using the G6R, RCN will be able to deploy a number of new services or take a cap and grow strategy with their existing class five switch.
"They’re looking for primary line PSTN quality service," said Cavanaugh. "We’ve seen a lot of pick up in primary line for cable."
