Cable modems from Motorola, Scientific-Atlanta, Terayon, Texas Instruments and Xrosstech were certified along with Terayon’s cable modem termination system [CMTS].
DOCSIS 2.0, which is compatible with previous DOCSIS versions, boosts symmetrical data speeds to 30 Mb/s, clearing the way for cable operators to deliver commercial services such as peer-to-peer networks and videoconferencing over existing plant. Additionally, DOCSIS 2.0 products, seen as potential “DSL killers” by many in the cable industry, will cost about the same as less-feature rich DOCSIS 1.1 gear, ensuring a quick adoption industry-wide and the inclusion of DOCSIS 2.0 in residential deployments.
CableLabs also said that the International Telecommunications Union-Telecommunications Sector [ITU-T] has approved a standard defining DOCSIS 2.0.--Jim Barthold, senior editor
