BellSouth will use the CO-based units to provide 100% DSL coverage to all of its COs in the state. However, because of distance limitations, the company will not have 100 of its lines DSL-capable. It does push up BellSouth’s overall penetration capabilities, though.

“What this does is that BellSouth will now have 795,000 DSL-capable lines in South Carolina,” said Jay Fausch, senior director of marketing for Alcatel’s Broadband Networking Division. “They are now, on a systemwide basis, going to have 73% of their lines covered.”

BellSouth has about 1.36 million total access lines in the state, according to the latest FCC records.
