The company, which has experimented with both satellite-based video services as well as wireless technologies, currently serves 12 high-rises in the Toronto metro area. Part of the reasoning behind the expansion is the difficulty in getting satellite service deployed, said Jean Huppe, director of access network technology development for Bell Canada.

“On our satellite service, the penetration was very low, about 5%,” he said.

The company is currently using Next Level’s VDSL equipment to provide the service and is looking to expanding using similar technology. However, going forward, the carrier is looking into ADSL 2+.

“In order to speed up deployment for the end of the year, we had to go with what we had,” Huppe said.
