AFC bulks up CO platform, preps video play

Advanced Fibre Commuications today announced an upgrade to its Telliant 5000 multiservice platform including the addition of an integrated IP broadband remote access service and a new option that lets carriers support layer 3 services.

Additionally, the company said the Telliant 5000 also has been made a little more dense, supporting up to 456 T1/E1 ports and including three new OC-12c/STM4 ATM modules.

The addition of support for layer 3 services comes as a direct result of the company’s acquisition of AccessLAN, said Ryan Koontz, director of marketing for AFC.

In the next few months, the company will begin moving toward a DSL video solution geared toward its traditional independent telco market. Though AFC isn’t tipping its hand just yet, the company likely will take an approach that emphasizes a decentralized architecture.

“A centralized approach really won’t scale when it comes to deploying new services,” Koontz said.
