The Nimbra 600 series initially will come in two flavors: the 680 version, which is an 80 Gb/s switch designed for everything from metro core deployment to professional media networks; and the 688, which has twice the access and switch capacity. The back plane of the platform is 160 Gb/s. By loading up an entire rack, carriers feasibly could have a 1 Tb/s system.

The new products are part of Net Insight’s Nimbra line and will include the same features as the Nimbra One and Nimbra 340.

“It has all the features of our previous products,” said Thomas Duffy, CEO of Net Insight.

Among the features the company also is hawking is the use of a next-gen SDH/Sonet technology that provides for the lowest cost-per-bit switching with zero packet loss.

The company is naturally targeting carriers launching triple-play services, noting that it can switch significant amounts of video in a variety of architectures. At the same time, the new products also fit well into other models, Duffy said.

“Since we also carry legacy traffic, it’s ideal if you have triple play or you have media customer and you want to sell them a VPN,” he said.
