The unit, which can act as either a router or a bridge, will serve as the customer premises equipment for customers on SureWest’s copper network. That network, which is mostly in the carrier’s incumbent territory in and around Roseville, Calif., reaches about 7000 subscribers.

Comtrend General Manager Andrew Morton said the CT562+ deployment continues a trend among its customers of wanting to deploy intelligent CPE devices. The vendor, which produces CPE across several sectors, has seen the demand increase for more sophisticated gear particularly in the residential market.

“We’re stealing a lot of the same principals from the enterprise traffic management world,” Morton said.

In the SureWest deployment, the CT562+ will use IGMP snooping and proxy software to direct voice, data and video traffic to its proper end point. Comtrend already has completed interoperability testing with Occam Networks, which is the primary DSLAM vendor in the SureWest ADSL2+ network.
