Zafirovski succeeds Bill Owens, came into the roles after the company fired Frank Dunn in light of an investigation into the company’s earnings reports. Zafirovski officially began on Saturday.

In a prepared statement, Harry Pearce, chairman of Nortel’s board, said, “Mike Zafirovski has the kind of proven, team-building leadership that has seen him create significant new value during his career in two of the world’s most important global corporations. He’s the right leader to build on the important work of Bill Owens--and take Nortel to the next level.”

Prior to Motorola, where he worked for five years, Zafirovski served for 15 years with several divisions at General Electric. Nortel plans to hold a news conference today to introduce him.
