The jobs, assisting customers who self-install their DSL service and otherwise fielding basic questions, had been outsourced both domestically and overseas, AT&T said.

The company will add the jobs by the end of 2008, though doesn’t yet know where they will be located. The addition of 2000 employees would amount to a 1% increase in AT&T’s total workforce.

The decision came through an agreement between AT&T and the Communications Workers of America union.

AT&T is also currently hiring installers for its U-Verse video service as part of a separate agreement with CWA reached in recent months, the company said.
