Alcatel Lucent merger closes

Eight months after it was announced, the merger of Alcatel and Lucent Technologies officially closed today, two equipment vendors said.

The company, now the world’s largest supplier of telecom equipment, lays claim to 25,000 active patents and 79,000 employees, about 9,000 of which will be let go over the next two years. It employs about 23,000 engineers.

Starting tomorrow, shares of “Alcatel-Lucent,” as the company will now be known, will be traded on Euronext Paris and the New York Stock Exchange under the ticker ALU.

The company anticipates annual revenue exceeding $25 billion.
