T-Mobile: Getting (4G) blood from a (3G) stone?

Working with Nokia Siemens Networks, the carrier says it has reached speeds in excess of 650Mbps with Long Term HSPA Evolution.

Even with all the hype surrounding 4G wireless technology, it seems there’s a chance 3G has a little more life in it.

T-Mobile announced today it can bring 3G download speeds up to 4G levels (currently it boasts 650 Mbps). At the heart of that ability is a technology T-Mobile has embraced— Long Term HSPA Evolution, which it says greatly enhances HSPA’s capabilities. Along with Nokia Siemens Networks, the operator has been pushing the 3GPP’s RAN focus groups to standardize Long Term HSPA Evolution to allow for more options in competing against LTE (Long-Term Evolution). Nokia Siemens Networks contends the standard could be available for commercial use by 2013.

What that means is that this enhanced flavor of HSPA can achieve increased speeds (rivaling LTE-Advanced or WiMAX speeds), while remaining backward compatible with HSPA and WCDMA networks. How valid are the numbers? Back in July, InMobile wrote about the data speed showdown, and Phone Scoop ran a series of tests that found that T-Mobile’s HSPA+ network matched and even exceeded the speed provided by Sprint/Clearwire Mobile WiMax.

T-Mobile said it will have the faster HSPA service live in over 100 major metro markets by the end of this year.
