Facebook and the communication meltdown

Briefing Room

Two years ago when I started covering telecom, I shared the opinion that Facebook should be used for social reasons only, not professional networking — an opinion I’ve had to let go as more and more of my new friends are work contacts and not social acquaintances. In reality, social networks are what you make of them, and — let’s face it — the jealousy observed in the relationship study may be more of a personality flaw, not a flaw of social networks. Still, I maintain that Facebook, like most social networks gone mobile, is optimal for purely social, mostly insignificant interaction. At the least, this mind-set would help cut out of some of the drama from turbulent college relationships.
